Children from urban environments are more than twice as likely to be myopic as those from rural environments. While the exact cause of myopia is unknown, there is significant evidence that many people inherit myopia, or at least the tendency to develop myopia. If one or both parents are near sighted, there is an increased chance their children will be near sighted. Even though the tendency to develop myopia may be inherited, its actual development may be affected by how a person uses his or her eyes. Individuals who spend considerable time reading, working at a computer, or doing other intense close visual work may be more likely to develop myopia. Excessive use of devices such a mobile phones, laptops and tablets and reduced hours outdoors, may contribute to rapid myopia progression as well Because of the visual implications it is essential that all children be screened at school entry level for presence of myopia and those that do be treated and followed up closely so as to slow the progression of myopia. Children of myopic parents should get screened even earlier at around age 3-3.5years.
